review | how to lose friends and alienate people (2008)

I love SofaCinema (which is actually LoveFilm but via The Guardian, as they were offering me £20 worth of M&S vouchers if I signed up that way instead). I love it because it allows me to add films to my rental list then promptly forget all about them until they land, with a plop, on the doormat. I don’t know about the plop bit, obviously, I just added that for effect.

So, yes, I love SofaCinema. Mostly. I did right up until last night when we watched How To Lose Friends And Alienate People, which came up in the ‘Recommended Especially For You, Lucy’ section. Now I hate SofaCinema a bit, because How To Lose Friends And Alienate People is the worst film I have seen so far this year and I’m immensely p*ssed off at losing two hours watching it, on top of the one hour last weekend when the clocks went forward. People keep robbing time off me, and right now I blame Simon Pegg.

I’m not sure what happened to Simon Pegg but he’s lost his mojo (in my humble opinion) since the glory days of Spaced, Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. Everything since then (apart from Star Trek, according to Steve), has been turd.

Here is why How To Lose Friends And Alienate People is so motherflipping awful:

1) Kirsten Dunst is in it
2) Simon Pegg’s overacting is cringeworthy
3) Megan Fox is in it (controversial, I know, but I don’t fancy her so won’t be pretending she can act, unlike everyone else)
4) The script is clunky and awkward
5) There’s a weird mix of predictability and ridiculousness that confused me to the point that I wanted to stop watching about seven or eight times, but Steve wouldn’t let me, as he’s a softie and likes to give fillums a proper watch before he judges them. Bless.

So, in conclusion, life’s too short. Do something more fun than watch this film. In fact, do anything else – it doesn’t have to be fun. Stab yourself in the eye. You’ll thank me for it.

I know I’ve seen this movie, but for the life of me I can’t remember a single thing about it. I didn’t recall any of those actors were in it, I don’t remember a shred of the plot. That’s how much of an impression it made upon me, so if you’re lucky it will simply disappear for you as well. I imagine the actors could possibly have the same reaction when the (hopefully meager) royalty cheque arrives “Wait, I starred in what?”
