So recently Steve has been on a bit of a horror film rampage on Amazon, buying all the DVDs he hasn’t seen that pop up in his ‘recommend’ list. And now we’ve watched them all and it turns out Amazon doesn’t really know what it’s talking about in most cases. But in the case of Pontypool, it was bang on the money.

Despite Steve falling asleep in the middle, I really enjoyed Pontypool. I thought it was incredibly clever, in that way where you can’t quite get your head round the concept fully but it sounds like it might just make sense and anyway you’re too into the film to take five minutes trying to work it out properly so whatever, let’s just watch it.

The main dude, played by Stephen McHattie, is instantly recognisable from about a million other films, and is perfectly cast as Grant Mazzy, a recently-demoted-to-local-radio DJ. He’s got a lovely gruff, hypnotic voice that makes you wish he were a real DJ because he’d show these ChrisMoyles-alikes a thing or two.

Anyway, there’s some gore for those that like it, some impeccable direction and photography for those that care, and some creative scripting if that’s your bag. In fact, it’s got pretty much everything you want in a psychological thriller. And that, my friends, is why I’m giving it four stars.
